Basketball Award

Kevin's love was the game of basketball.  He began playing competitively in 3rd grade and his enthusiasm and dedication to the sport continued to grow.

After the accident, a friend of Kevin’s shared a story about how he noticed whenever Kevin put up a shot he always said something.  Finally he asked Kevin what he was saying.  Kevin replied, “I’m talking to the ball and I whisper two words every time I shoot…Be There.”  Kevin’s sophomore basketball team chose these words, each and every time they broke a huddle, to honor and remember Kevin.  They were also asking a very dear friend and teammate to always “Be There” guiding them in spirit and mind throughout the course of the contest.

For many, these two words have come to mean more than the mere act of putting a basketball through the hoop.  They touch areas that transcend the game of basketball.  Kevin was always “there” for his family, his teammates, his parents, his friends, younger children and when called, was “there” for his God.  He strived to be a better person, on the court as well as in everyday life.

Kevin demonstrated his love of the game by always "Being There" at practices, camps and in the weight room, always trying to improve himself.  He respected the game and all those associated with it.  Kevin devoted most of his time to basketball, but did not neglect his other responsibilities...such as family, teammates and friends, work, school or his faith.  Kevin knew there needed to be a balance in order to achieve his goals and dreams.  He strived to be better...on the court...as well as off.  He unselfishly would "Be There" for others before and during the pursuit of his own endeavors.

As a result of Kevin's devotion to the game, the "Be There" award was created to recognize a Senior basketball player from Marian Central Catholic High School who demonstrates the traits so very important to Kevin; commitment to the game, as well as to his faith, family, teammates and friends.  The award recognizes the player that exemplifies these behaviors.
